You booked your massage. Now what?

Should you eat before your appointment? Drink extra water? Arrive early? Work out afterward? And what happens if you show up feeling stressed, sore, or unsure about what kind of pressure you want?

A little preparation can help you settle into your massage more comfortably, but getting ready for a massage doesn't need to become another item on your stress list.

At Blue Lotus Massage & Wellness Center in Tucson, we want you to arrive ready to relax — not worried about whether you've followed the perfect massage routine.

Here are some simple things to consider before and after your session.

Before Your Massage: Give Yourself Time

One of the easiest ways to prepare for a massage is simply to avoid rushing.

If possible, give yourself enough time to arrive, get settled, use the restroom, and transition out of whatever you were doing before your appointment.

Running through the door stressed because you're worried about being late isn't exactly the ideal beginning to relaxation.

Before your appointment:

  • Allow enough travel time.

  • Use the restroom if needed.

  • Silence your phone.

  • Take a moment to mentally leave the rest of your day outside the massage room.

  • Let your therapist know if anything has changed since your last visit.

At Blue Lotus, your massage begins with a conversation about how you're feeling and what you'd like from your session.

Should You Eat Before a Massage?

You don't need to arrive hungry, but a large, heavy meal immediately before lying on a massage table may not be the most comfortable choice.

If you're hungry before your appointment, a normal meal or light snack with enough time to digest is usually more comfortable than either extreme.

Most importantly, listen to your body.

Massage is supposed to feel good. Being distracted because you're overly full — or because your stomach is growling — doesn't exactly help with relaxation.

What Should You Tell Your Massage Therapist?

Communication is one of the most important parts of a customized massage.

Before your session, tell your therapist about:

  • Areas that feel tight or uncomfortable.

  • Areas you would like them to focus on.

  • Areas you would prefer they avoid.

  • Recent injuries or physical changes.

  • Your pressure preference.

  • Whether something worked particularly well during a previous massage.

  • Anything that could affect your comfort during the session.

Communication doesn't stop once the massage begins.

If the pressure feels too strong or too light, the room feels too warm or cool, or something simply doesn't feel right, speak up.

A massage shouldn't be something you endure.

Do You Have to Choose Between Relaxation and Therapeutic Massage?

Not necessarily.

Some people assume that therapeutic massage has to be intense or that a relaxing massage can't accomplish meaningful work.

At Blue Lotus, we don't see those as opposites.

Your massage can include focused therapeutic work where you need it while maintaining a flowing, restorative experience throughout the rest of the session.

Depending on your needs, complimentary enhancements such as aromatherapy, hot stones, and cupping may also be incorporated into your massage.

The goal is to customize the experience around you rather than forcing your body into a predetermined massage routine.

What Should You Do Immediately After a Massage?

Give yourself a moment.

You don't have to jump off the table and immediately return to full speed.

After your massage:

  • Sit up slowly if you feel deeply relaxed.

  • Take a moment before getting dressed.

  • Drink according to your normal thirst.

  • Notice how your body feels.

  • Pay attention to areas that feel different from when you arrived.

  • Follow any appropriate self-care suggestions discussed with your therapist.

If possible, give yourself a little breathing room before rushing into the next part of your day.

Sometimes extending that relaxed feeling for even a few extra minutes is worth it.

Do You Need to Drink Tons of Water After a Massage?

You've probably heard that you need to drink huge amounts of water after a massage to "flush toxins."

You don't.

Massage doesn't require you to force down excessive amounts of water afterward.

Normal hydration is still important, of course. If you're thirsty, drink water. If you've been hiking, exercising, spending time outdoors in Tucson's heat, or haven't been drinking enough throughout the day, hydration may be especially important for reasons unrelated to the massage itself.

But there's no need to turn your water bottle into homework.

Drink normally and listen to your thirst.

Can You Exercise After a Massage?

It depends on the massage, the workout, and how you feel afterward.

Some people feel ready to continue with their normal day. Others feel deeply relaxed and would rather take it easy.

After more focused therapeutic work, you may prefer giving your body some time before jumping into an intense workout.

If you already know you're planning a particularly strenuous activity, you can also mention that to your massage therapist before the session.

Your massage should complement your lifestyle — not compete with it.

Is It Normal to Feel Different After a Massage?

Everyone responds differently.

You might leave feeling:

  • Relaxed.

  • Energized.

  • Sleepy.

  • Less tense.

  • More aware of areas that were tight.

  • Ready for a very good night's sleep.

How you feel can also vary from one massage to another.

Pay attention to your body's response. That information can help you communicate what worked well when you return for your next session.

Make Your Massage Work for You

Preparing for massage doesn't require an elaborate ritual.

You don't need the perfect meal, the perfect hydration schedule, or a complicated list of things to do afterward.

Give yourself enough time to arrive comfortably. Communicate with your therapist. Pay attention to your body. And allow yourself to enjoy the experience.

At Blue Lotus Massage & Wellness Center in Tucson, our integrative massage sessions are customized around what you need that day, combining expert therapeutic care with a relaxing, resort-style experience.

Come as you are.

We'll take it from there.
